People are living longer. The 2000 census reports that the number of persons 65 years of age and over is expected to double by the year 2030 and the fastest growing segment of the population today consists of people who are 85 years of age and older. AARP has completed several studies on the aging population and states that "About one in every eight, or 12.4 percent, of the population is an older American and that persons reaching age 65 have an average life expectancy of an additional 18.5 years."

As reported in Reuters, lead researcher Dr. Terri Fried said giving older patients ""this kind of active role in treatment decisions means more customized outcomes for patients".
